CARIBBEAN AND AMERICAS DEPARTMENT

The Caribbean and Americas Department is primarily responsible for assisting in fulfilling one of the Ministry’s mandates of promoting and protecting Jamaica’s interest and enhancing its image in the region. It does this by coordinating the Ministry’s responsibilities and relations with CARICOM and its hemispheric neighbours.

The department collaborates with various regional organizations of which Jamaica is a member, in order to further consolidate and strengthen the regional cooperation and integration process.

Some of these organizations are the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Organization of American States (OAS), and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

The department monitors and assists in promoting overall relations between CARICOM and countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as other regional groupings such as the Rio Group, MERCOSUR, CARICOM/SICA, Andean Development Cooperation, Group of three, South American Community. It is also actively involved in pursuing bilateral relations with the fourteen (14) CARICOM Members States, Associate Members States, as well as Cuba and the Dominican Republic in order to enhance Jamaica’s social and economic development.

The order to fulfill its responsibilities, the department researches, analyses, monitors and provides reports on developments in relation to the respective countries, international and regional bodies under its purview. It also provides information and prepares, as well as coordinates the preparation of briefs, statements, discussion papers and other relevant documents to facilitate Jamaica’s representation at local, regional and international meetings and to ensure that Jamaica’s views on issues on the hemispheric agenda are clearly articulated.

In carrying out its functions, the department liaises with local Missions, international organizations, Ministries, statutory bodies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and private sector entities.
