INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS DEPARTMENT Objective The International Organizations Department oversees, defines and establishes the basis on which Jamaica participates in international and inter-governmental organizations, specifically the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The responsibilities of the Department in these organizations are: 1. The United Nations To promote and protect Jamaica’s interest in the United Nations, through participation in the work of its Principal Organs, particularly the General Assembly and its Main and Standing Committees (except the Second Committee which is covered by the Economic Affairs Department) as well as its Subsidiary and Ad Hoc Bodies. 2. CommonwealthMonitoring the work of the Commonwealth and coordinating representation to the Heads of Government Meetings. 3. Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)Coverage of issues addressed by the NAM and coordination of representation to its Ministerial and Summit Meetings. Some of the issues which fall under the purview of this Department in its coverage of the respective organizations, include Disarmament, Human Rights, Refugees, United Nations Peacekeeping Operations and Candidatures to regional and international Bodies. The work of the Department is significantly enhanced through the mechanism of consultation which it maintains with other Government Departments on a systematic basis in order to ensure full coordination in policy development and implementation. In addition, there is constant consultation with the overseas missions, particularly the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations in New York and Geneva and the High Commission in London (viz on Commonwealth issues).
